The Ondo State University of Medical Sciences is now University of Medical Science (UNIMED) Ondo.

The Management of Ondo State University of Medical Sciences hereby wishes to direct the attention of the general public and also all prospective 2017/18 JAMB applicants that in the current JAMB brochure for 2017/2018 academic session, the university’s name was inadvertently written as Ondo state university of Medical sciences, Ondo.

For the avoidance of doubt, Ondo state university of Medical sciences was the initial name of the university at take off before the current name ‘UNIVERSITY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES (UNIMED) ONDO’ was adopted which was yet to be rectified before JAMB released its applications for admission for 2017/2018 academic session.

The general public especially candidates seeking admission into the institution are hereby advised to take note of this important information and please continue with processing their admissions with the name ‘ONDO STATE UNIVERSITY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES, ONDO’ under reference pending the correction with JAMB.

Thank you for your support and interest in the university

Jamb To Use Military Personnel For 2017 UTME

As candidates prepares for the forth- coming 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has formed a common synergy with the Nigerian Army to secure the Computer Based Tests (CBT) centres with a view to having a hitch free examination.
The joint Admission And Matriculation Board has revealed that it is going to deploy military Personnels to various centers during the 2017 UTME Exam.
This is contained in a statement issued by the head of information,JAMB Dr Fabian Benjamin who said that Soldiers would be drafted to the various computer based Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) centres in some parts of the country to beef up security.
According to the ststement released by him, this decision was reached after a meting between JAMB Registrar, Professor Is-haq O. Oloyede and Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai in Abuja.
The Matriculation Board Aliased with the Nigerian army to secure the Computer Based Test (CBT) centres with a motive to having a hitch free examination for the 2017 UTME.
The Nigerian army chief of staff General Buratai stated that some of the reasons given by the register is the issue of Fulani herds men who may pose a threat to candidates writing their exams in the northern region of the country. Therefore he promised to deploy more military personels to those areas during the UTME examination.
The spokesperson of JAMB, Dr. Fabian Benjamin pointed out that the mandate of JAMB was to conduct matriculation examination and place qualified candidates who desire a qualitative education to all Nigerian tertiary institutions adding that the Board was at the verge of the first process hence the need to secure the various computer based Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) centres, candidates and examination officials.

“This need became imperative to seek for security intervention from the military, particularly in turbulent areas pron to terror attack”, he said.

The Registrar noted that over 678 centres across the country against the last year’s figure of 650 CBT centres would be put to use with estimated 1.5million candidates for the examination, adding that 1.237million candidates have already submitted their application to the board.

Oloyede also told the Chief of Army staff that though there was collaboration with Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas (NLNG) to airlift candidates in riverine areas to their CBT centres. He pleaded that the COAS intervene as the NLNG intervention though noble was not enough.

The JAMB Registrar while listing some security prone areas like North East, South South among others, noted that the process of seeking admission through the conduct of examination should not be truncated, adding that the sight of security presence during the examination would give the candidate a high level of satisfaction and confidence.

The JAMB Chief Executive informed the Army management that this year the Board will be capturing 2017 UTME candidates ten fingers to forestall any incidence of multiple registrations as noticed with previous years registration.

The Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund, PTDF,Dr Bello Gusau,on Wednesday in Abuja has stated that granting scholarships to students to study overseas may no longer continue.Read his statement below:

”The present scholarship arrangement, which is disproportionately focused on the Overseas Scholarship Scheme, is no longer sustainable and therefore needs to be reversed”, Gusau said at an interactive session with Vice-Chancellors of Federal Universities in Nigeria.
A statement by Mr Kalu Otisi, PTDF Head, Press and External Relations Unit, quoted Gusau as saying that there would be a new strategic agenda that would govern the training and capacity building programmes of the Fund.
“At the centre of the agenda is the domestication of all PTDF training and capacity building programmes, with the implication that Nigerian universities will now play a greater role in the process as partners and major stakeholders.
“The bulk of the scholarship for both the Masters and PhD’s to be offered going forward, would be for training in Nigerian universities.
“We are also open to collaboration, especially through the split-site Ph.D programme,’’ he said.

Dr Bello Gusau said the meeting with the Vice-Chancellors was to agree on relevant terms as well as gather sufficient information that will assist the Fund in the planning and implementation process.

Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, lauded the initiative, saying it tallied with the vision to collectively reform Postgraduate training in Nigeria.

Abubakar defined PTDF as the single most important intervention agency outside the education family intervening to build capacity in select areas within the country.
