University Of Jos Restores SUG Activities

The 12th Governing Council of the University of Jos has directed the immediate implementation of the Federal Government approved school charges of Forty-Five Thousand Naira (N45,000) for all Federal Universities. Council directed the University Management to implement the payment across all levels of studentship for undergraduates in the University.

The Governing Council’s decision was made during its 11th Regular Meeting. Council deliberated extensively on issues surrounding the implementation of school charges as directed by the Federal Government and met with Exco members of the Unijos Branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Council observed that an earlier memo conveying resolutions reached with Staff Unions over the payment of school charges by Students was not authorized by it or the Federal Government and therefore should be disregarded.
In a bid to resolve some of the lingering issues regarding the school charges, Council further directed that the dissolved Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University should be reinstated.
This is subject to the condition that each member of the dissolved SUG writes a letter of apology to the University Management for tarnishing the image of the University in the public domain, that each dissolved SUG member pledges to be of good behavior and to maintain good discipline and that they do not introduce any discussion on the approved new school charges of Forty-Five Thousand Naira (N45,000).

Council similarly enjoined Management and Unions of the University to work harmoniously in cordial understanding through constant interaction for the growth and development of the institution.

Its no longer news as candidates and the general public are fully awara that the first ever UTME mock hasbeen postponed to a “yet to be disclosed” date by the Joint Admission Maltriculation Board (JAMB). Similarly The UTME registration deadline was also extended by a two week margin,Meaning that under the new arrangements, the examination will commence on Saturday, May 13th and end on Saturday, 20th May 2017.

Below are the reasons why JAMB Postponed UTME Mock And Registrations UTME Examination

  • Logistics And Technical Issues

JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, Disclosed on Saturday in his speech that one of the major reasons for the extension is as a result of logistics and technical issues being experienced by the board over the UTME registrations.
In his speech he said “Meanwhile, the Mock Examination earlier slated for Saturday, April 8, 2017 has been put on hold. This is because the appropriate rehearsal and test-running of the new system has not been substantially achieved”.

It is obvious from the statement that proper tests have not been conducted on the system to determine its effectiveness and efficiency.

  • Full Candidate Registration

Many candidates have encountered so many issues and difficulties from the new UTME registration procedure especially with the e-pin. Some candidates who have paid for the e-pin are yet to get notified due to one issue or the other.

In as much as about one million (1,000,000) candidates have successfully completed their registrations, it is not an indicator that every other person have been successful with the registration. So in favour of those facing some problems with the registration, JAMB want to make sure it captures every student who want to be a part of the 2017 UTME hence the extension of the registration deadline.

  • More Successful Examination

JAMB want to conduct a smooth and hitch-free UTME this year, hence JAMB boss is doing everything possible to make sure this goal is achieved. In a press briefing on the 8th, the JAMB boss stated:

“At this moment, we have realized that the plan to hold this Mock Examination was good for us. We are now in a better position to achieve better than we would have done without this trial testing. This is why the exercise is at no cost to the candidates”.
“It is our strong conviction that this exercise is an experience for us. Our systems analysis has revealed interesting findings that will engender a seamless and successful 2017 UTME exercise”.

Judging from the reasons given by the Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede,i believe that the changes made so far are in the best interest of the candidates, we hope this year UTME will be free from hitches and probably the best so far.

Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has announced an extension of the ongoing registration exercise for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations by two weeks.

.

This came as the Mock examination which was earlier scheduled to be taken on sarturday 8th April,  but was postponed till further notice due to unknown circumstance yet to be disclosed by the Body.

The 2017 UTME  examination scheduled to commence on Saturday, May 6, 2017,has now be postponed to an extra two weeks.Under this new development, the examination is to commence on Saturday, May 13th to 20th.
JAMB’s registrar,Professor Ishaq Oloyede, who announced the developments at a news briefing in Abuja,, hinted that the reason for extension of the registration period is basically on logistic problems.

ALSO READ :

Professor  Oloyede, who could not disclose the logistic issues, explained that failure on the part of technical partners resulted to the developments. He said instead of the earlier announced April 19, the deadline for the sale of forms and registration is now extended to Friday, May 5, 2017.

The board, according to the registrar, sincerely apologised to all candidates and other stakeholders on the sudden changes.

Below is the Full Statement By JAMB’s registrar,Professor Ishaq Oloyede at the briefing:

“The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board wishes to apologise to candidates and other stakeholders. We could not go on with the Mock Examination and hereby announce extension of registration exercise of the 2017 UTME. Instead of the earlier announced April 19, the deadline for the sale of forms and registration will now extend to Friday, May 5, 2017. Consequently, the 2017 UTME has also been postponed to start on Saturday, May 13 – 20, 2017.
“Meanwhile, the Mock Examination earlier slated for Saturday, April 8, 2017 has been put on hold. This is because the appropriate rehearsal and test-running of the new system has been substantially achieved.
The plan was to trial-test the readiness of our facilities and addresses the challenges that may likely confront the main examination. The Mock Examination remains free for willing candidates, even the fee due to the CBT centre Owners are being paid by JAMB. No cost to the candidates
“At this moment, we have realized that the plan to hold this Mock Examination was good for us. We are now in a better position to achieve better than we would have done without this trial testing. This is why the exercise is at no cost to the candidates.
“It is our strong conviction that this exercise is an experience for us. Our systems analysis has revealed interesting findings that will engender a seamless and successful 2017 UTME exercise.
“On behalf of JAMB, we use this opportunity to appreciate our stakeholders, including the candidates, for being part of this experiment. Every disappointment is a blessing, an old adage says. The blessing that will trail the suspension of this Mock Examination and extension of registration deadline will manifest in our main UTME by next month.
“Once again, we appreciate and apologise to the candidates who chose to participate in this free and voluntary Mock Examination. They are part of our experience towards ensuring a fruitful and successful UTME this year and in future.”

Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB has hereby announced the suspension of the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) for 52 hours.
The suspension, Prof. Oloyede said, which took effect from 8 p.m on Friday, was to create space for CBT centres to administer the just cancelled Mock UTME tests scheduled for today, April 8.
The registration for UTME will resume on Monday, April 10, the registrar said.

Oloyede reassured the candidates that there was no need for worry or anxiety; adding that in the next one week, eligible and interested applicants will be successfully registered, as, already, 1,000,000 applicants have successful registered.

Read full statement below:

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) wishes to again assure Nigerians especially the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) candidates and their parents that all hands are on deck to ensure the smooth conduct of this year’s UTME exercise.
We want to reiterate that the interest of the candidates is foremost to the Board and there is no need for any apprehension regarding the purchase of forms and registration for the examinations. It is our commitment as a responsive and responsible body to ensure that no willing candidate is left out and if there is a need to extend the registration deadline, the needful will be done.
Meanwhile, Saturday April 8th , 2017 has been set aside for the Mock UTME. To seamlessly achieve this, the Board has SUSPENDED all activities relating to the registration exercise in ANY CBT centre from 8pm today being Friday 7thof April, 2017 and to resume on Monday 10THof April, 2017. This is to notify the candidates and the concerned stakeholders that there will be no sale of forms, registration and biometric capturing at the various centres in which the Mock Examinations are taking place.
This however does not preclude any candidate from going to Banks, NIPOST, interswitch or Remita to procure pins for registration on Monday. This is to prevent any disruption of the process and conduct of the mock examination.
The Mock Examinations for interested candidates taking place Saturday 8th April, 2017 is intended to familiarize our candidates with the CBT systems and generally forecast the challenges that may be faced ahead in order to proactively address them. It is just a rehearsal for us and candidates who want to experience the situation to expect during the actual examinations.
Therefore, the sale of forms, registration and biometrics at CBT Centres are to be suspended from 8:00 p.m. today till Monday, April 10, 2017. This notice is for the strict adherence of our officers and partners throughout the Federation.
While wishing the candidates and officials participating in the examination a successful mock exercise, we once again re-assure the candidates that there is no need for worry or anxiety. The next one week we believe is sufficient to capture the remaining candidates as about 1,000,000 applicants have successful registered.
However, as stated earlier, no one will be left behind as the deadline may be extended if there are applicants who do not succeed at registering due to circumstances beyond their control.
The Board sincerely regrets all inconveniences and state it resolved to work tirelessly to change the fortune of education in Nigerian.

Registrar, JAMB

Prof. Is’haq Oloyede, the Registrar, Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has announced the suspension of the mock UTME that was billed to hold today.

He claimes this sudden change of planned event had to be taken, stating that the circumstances was beyond his control.

Oloyede revealed the shocking news through a text message which was sent to supervisors at the various examination centres in the FCT on Saturday in Abuja.

He regretted the inconveniences the postponement might have caused the public especially the candidates who have shown up for the MOCK examination. Oloyede said a new date would be communicated to candidates soon.

At the Christ the King College (CKC), Gwagwalada, FCT one of the mock centres, candidates had sat patiently waiting to write the test.
Though their were glitches experienced by some candidates who failed to come to the centre with their mock print out form found it difficult to identify their seat number.

Mrs Rachael Angulu, JAMB supervisor at the centre however advised candidates to print out their mock form before coming to the centre next time.Angulu said the centre was to host 236 candidates.

NAN correspondent at the Digital Bridge Institute at Utako, another Centre reports that the students were very disappointed that the test was suspended.Mr Nwanze Okonkwo said that the centre was supposed to take 750 candidates.

A candidate, Miss Sarah Adeniyi, said she arrived at the centre as early as 6.30am and as at 1.30 pm she had not been allowed into the premises.

“I am so tired and hungry. I rushed down here thinking they would keep to time. Look at us under the sun since morning.

“I just feel like forgetting about this whole mock of a thing,” she lamented.

Another candidate, Dayo Lawal expressed disgust with the way the trial test was botched. He hoped that JAMB would have gotten its act together before the real JAMB examination in May.

The mock examination, which is not compulsory, was designed to acquaint prospective candidates on the demands of the examination and its processes using the Computer Based Testing (CBT) mode.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who monitored the examination in some parts of Lagos, reports that candidates reported at their respective centres as early as 5.00 a.m.

In one of the centres in Ikeja, candidates waited patiently till about 2.00 p.m. for the examination to start.

The postponement didnt go down well with many of the candidates.

One of the candidates told NAN that it would be good for JAMB to avoid a repeat of the development during the normal examination.

“Imagine what just happened; we have been waiting here as early as 6.00 a.m. only for us to be informed that the normal examination will no longer hold.

“I feel disappointed even though it is a trial examination, but at the same time, it is an eye opener for the organisers to be on their toes, get it right before May 6,’’ the candidate said.

Another candidate, Samuel Joel, called on JAMB to do the needful in order to allay the fears that the development might have raised.

Joel said that the country had come a long way to be having such challenges.

“I do not really know the main reason for the postponement of the mock examination, but I just think that somewhere somehow, things did not just turn out well.

“I am not happy going home now without doing the examination after waiting for about eight hours.

“Whatever it is that was responsible, it should be tackled as quickly as possible to in order to regain the confidence of the candidates,’’ he said.
