BIRS Seals University Of Agriculture Makurdi Over N2.3B Debt (photos)

Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS)eailier today, distrained by sealing the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (FUAM) over un-remitted 'Pay As You Earn' (PAYE) to the sum of over N2.3 billion.
Mrs. Mimi Adzape-Orubibi,The BIRS Execitive Chairman, who personally led the enforcement team that raided the University in the early hours of the day, sealed off the Vice Chancellor's office, the office of the Registrar as well as that of the Bursar amongst others.

Speaking with newsmen shortly after the exercise, Mrs. Adzape-Orubibi said BIRS had to take that necessary step after the institution failed to honour several letters directed to its management to pay up their outstanding Personal Income Tax from 2007 to 2011.

She further explained that the BIRS had obtained a court order to distrain FUAM because it deducted but failed to remit PAYE tax in some cases and under deducted in other cases; adding that the institution would now have to pay about N3 billion inclusive of penalties and interest before they can commence operations at the university.

While noting that though, the entire premises would have been sealed, the state government under the leadership of Governor Samuel Ortom is very concerned about education and would not want to render students helpless. She however posited that the decision to seal the institution became necessary owing to the continued evasion of tax by the school authority.

Jamb Reduces Examination Time From 3 hours To 2 hours.....Read Why

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), gives some reasons behind the reduction in the examination duration time by one hour from the regular three hours duration.

This was explained by the board registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, on Wednesday. He made this known in Kaduna during the opening ceremony of a strategic planning retreat on the monitoring, supervision and evaluation of 2017 UTME with the theme: “Inclusiveness and sensitisation of key external actors”.

He explained that keeping candidates for more than two hours would cause them to focus since the structured population targeted for UTME had been proven to have a short- attention span According to his statement, the reduction of hours was also in line with international best standards and practices where no candidate was kept in an examination such as UTME for more than two hours length.

He said: “We are going to reduce the duration of the examination for this year’s UTME. You cannot keep children of this age for three hours. For their age, the maximum time you can keep them is two hours. “So, we are considering the reduction in the time they spend because once it is more than two hours you can’t expect that they will retain their presence of mind.”
He disclosed that a total of 240,000 candidates had so far registered for the examination which had been scheduled for May 20th, barely one week after the commencement of the sale of forms which is expected to end on April 22.

Oloyede added that out of 13 commercial banks and the Nigeria Postal Service that had signified interest in the sales of the admission forms, only nine had paid for the number of application documents they required in the first instance.
JAMB DUMPS CBT TEST FOR "8-KEY" DEVICE...READ FULL DETAILS

THE Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced its resolve to abolish Computer Based Test (CBT) method for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) due to low computer literacy level of candidates.

It has also, in collaboration with a private institute, resolved to set up dedicated UTME centres for visually impaired candidates in Abuja, Lagos and Kano in 2018.
Registrar of the board, Prof. Is-haq Olanrewaju Oloyede, who said this in Kaduna yesterday, however, said the board would not revert to the old paper and pencil mode, but an “eight-key device”.
He spoke at the opening of Strategic Planning Retreat on Monitoring and Supervision of 2017 UTME at Arewa House in Kaduna.

READ : Steps To Create JAMB Profile For Proper Registration.

Oloyede discloses that the device would simply eradicate the challenges faced due to low computer literacy and phobia for mouse usage by some candidates.
He stated: “From the general feedback on the adoption of the Computer-Based Test mode, we have noted the challenge of computer low level literacy of some candidates, especially with the phobia for the mouse. This has been responsible partly for the call by some people for reversal to the Paper and Pencil Test mode.“To ensure equity and level playground for all candidates taking Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, the board has designed a system that will allow candidates use only eight keys without the use of mouse. All the candidates need to do is to press the letters A, B, C, D for responses to questions and keys: P, N, S and R representing; previous question, next question, submit and reverse, respectively.”
On the new arrangements for the visually impaired candidates, the JAMB Registrar said Digital Bridge Institute in partnership with the board has agreed to set up three dedicated centres in Abuja, Lagos and Kano in 2018.
He added that the board would support the centres with necessary inputs.
Ahead of 2018, when the project of dedicated centres will come to fruition, the board has reached an understanding with the association for the blind persons in Nigeria and blind students in Lagos that an abridged approach would be used for the 2017 UTME, whereby all prospective blind candidates would be invited to three centres in the country for special assessment in their subjects of choice and relevance to their desired courses and programmes.

Oloyede while addressing the participants, most of whom are external supervisors and other stakeholders drawn from various tertiary institutions and educational sector, said concerned stakeholders must take UTME as their own and make it a project.
He noted that the conduct of the board’s examination, which is a selection examination, is the foundation of quality education.
Oloyede, therefore, advised stakeholders to see their involvement in UTME as a call to national duty and personal sacrifice for the good of all and sundry.

The registrar said the agency may reduce the timeline for the UTME from three(3) hours to two(2) hours.
He added that the question papers will be uploaded five minutes to the examinations to check malpractice.

He said: “As for the 2017 UTME, it is likely we reduce the duration of the examinations. We are looking at two hours for the examinations instead of the present three-hour timeline. This is in line with international best practices.“As for the candidates, for their age, the maximum time they can sit for examinations is two hours. Even in terms of international standard, for primary school pupils, the maximum time for examinations is between 45minutes and one hour.”
He confirmed that about 300,000 candidates might sit for the mock UTME examinations on April 8, which will be used to test-run its new technology to make its examinations easier for students.
ASSU STRIKE BY THE CORNER AS THE UNION GIVES FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TILL JULY TO MEET THEIR TERMS ON PAYMENT OF OUTSTANDING ARREARS

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) demands that the Federal Government pays the outstanding arrears of its members not later than July 2017 or face the unions strike hammer..Remember not so long ago the issued a 14-day ultimatum to the federal government, the body have extended the ultimatum to July.

Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi,The National President of the union, made this public during a press conference at the University of Abuja yesterday where he stated that the Federal Government is owing academic staffs in federal universities unpaid allowances of not less than N128 billion.

“In view of this, the union rose from its NEC meeting at the Bayero University Kano observing that the particular issue of EAA cannot be meaningfully addressed unless within an agreed framework. Hence the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU resolved that all outstanding arrears of EAA should be paid not later than July 2017.
“The decision of ASUU-NEC on the issue has since been communicated to the Minister of Education, Senate President and the Chairman, Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund,’’ he said.

I suggest the Federal Government do whats necessary to prevent any form of strike as this would be a heavy blow to the already dwindling educational sector. Lets pray they have an understanding on the issue and avert this impending strike.

Some of the prospective candidates for the 2017 UTME have cried out to the Board to properly address the issue of poor internet services and other technical issues that has made the vending of the ePIN difficult in many of the banks and registration centres.

According to the gathered information , candidates in Keffi, Akwanga and Lafia Local Government Areas of Nasarawa State have been finding it very difficult to get their ePINs since the commencement of the registration process.

They therefore called on JAMB to adress all pending issues to enable them register before the given deadline.

Reacting to this, the Zonal Acting Coordinator of JAMB in Lafia Nasarawa State, Mr Moses Akobu, urged the prospective candidates to be patient, adding that the management of JAMB is already on top of the situation to resolve and rectify the problems.

“The new e-vending system is error free, so the hitches in which candidates are facing is temporary, just within a few hours or days, the problem will be over,” he assured candidates.

Many Nigerian students has difficulties in choice of institution,.Majorly due to a rush into decision making they choose wrongly or get emotional about it,like choosing a university because their boyfriend/girlfriend,brother/sister is in that University.Choice of institution should be done wisely and timely to avoid all possible pit falls associated with studying the right course in the wrong institution.
After reading this article you will no longer get biased or confused on how to make right decisions towards choosing the best University to study in.
I have written out series of steps to guide all Nigerian students especially young school levers who wish to enroll into higher or advanced learning in Nigeria universities.

1.Course Handling : This is one of the most important factor to ensure you choose the best institution suitable for you.Her you take consideration by accessing how well the institution is reputed in handling the course you want to study.it is very important that you do all necessary research about the institution of your choice. For instance,Universities of technology are very good at properly handling engineering courses just as Polytechnics are reputable for practicals aspects of certain studies like computer science and computer engineering.

2. Learning Environment : Many students ignore or neglect this factor as they subconsciously skip to note its importance towards academic excellence.Even if you are studying in the best school in the world, once their learning environment is very poor you will have a very hard time with your studies.Imagine these conditions :

  •  Taking lectures under the sun,now how can you be comfortable enough to focus on lectures and also deal with the sun intensity and constant sweat etc.
  • Sitting on the floor or standing through out lecture time.Discomfort is one thing i know that reduces your learning potentials.Once you maintain a bad posture either sitting or standing for a while, you experience ache in certain parts of your body, and due to you expense so much energy in keeping those positions, you suffer from fatigue, head ache etc which eventually forces you to leave lecture halls for some refreshment or rest.
  • Sitting at the rear in a lecture hall of 1000 capacity.in this kind of situations once you are late for class, you are as good as not in class that day because you will not get a thing said by the lecturer that day,the worse of it all is use a microphone for Nigerian lecturers is in most cases not attainable.
I can go on and on on this. Now you can see how important learning environment can be.

3.Cost Of Tuition : Tuition fees in Nigeria are unbearably high and expensive. But their is a better way to go around this and be on the safer side with tuition fee.
As far as i know privately owned Universities are just out of the hook with very very high cost on tuition fee.Though they are believed to offer the best education with conducive learning environment, but once you know you and your family members put together cant afford or survive such expenses, its will be unwise to choose such institutions and avoid 'stories that touch' having to drop out of school due to lack of funds.
But the best to go for once low fees is concerned is a federal University.Federal Universities are considerably low in fees due to access to funds from NDDC,TET,PTDF etc. When state schools are paying 100k for tuition fees,Federal Universities pay 40k. Be sure to go for the once you can afford that can impact knowledge.

4. Security :  In every community where government schools and colleges are sited, their is this high tendencies of miscreants, hoodlums or thugs of those communities taking advantage of the innocence and vulnerabilities of students in the schools, then intimidates, rapes, steals or even kill.
So if you value your life and properties then you should take account of how safe the school is and the security measures employed by the school should be taking to account.

5. Cultism : This is an extension to the NO. 4. So many have lost their lives to cultism and their are countless precious properties lost due to cultism.I think its safer to go into a school with the lowest rate of cultism. If you live in fear, how then can you go to night classes or study, how can you confidently go about your daily activities.Trust me someone who is been traumatized via rape, theft and regular beaten will definitely have issues with concentrating and excelling in their school work.So for your own good,do proper research, ask questions before deciding which University to study in.

With these few steps,i believe you can now make better choices on choosing a University to spend the next 5 years of your live in.

I see a mother giving birth to a new prophecy..
When he was inside the womb,he could remember the countless sleeps that he had in which he made uncountable dreams as well...
During adversity, he was able to ask fate numerous questions ..on the other hand he was too anxious to live to his expectations...
Well is really a deeper place he said to himself...
More deeper than that of the belle...
But since he made  beautiful dreams inside the womb of a mother's belle,he strongly believe that it will always lead to the achievement of this thought of humor...
Mother's deserve lots of reward because they first gave us a concept of dream,a comfortable sight for dreaming,a brave mind to grab the dream when you remember one of the dreams that  you had in full and amazing life while living the dream.....
Live your dream and live life at full because you are the only to witness a dream inside the small comfortable world.
